New Therapist Support Group

The transition from graduate school to working as a therapist can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Many new clinicians quickly discover that the realities of the field like finding that first job, working under supervision, and navigating workplace dynamics often look very different from what was discussed in the classroom.

This support group is designed specifically for early-career therapists and pre-licensed clinicians who want a supportive space to talk honestly about the experiences that come with the first stages of a counseling career.

Together, we’ll explore topics such as:
• What to expect when starting your first job in the mental health field
• Navigating the supervisory relationship and advocating for yourself as a supervisee
• Recognizing situations where you may be asked to do something unethical, inappropriate, or outside your scope
• Understanding how certain workplace decisions can impact licensure and long-term career trajectory
• Managing the stress, self-doubt, and professional pressures that often arise during the early years of practice

This is not a clinical consultation group, but rather a supportive space for connection, encouragement, and guidance from others who understand the unique challenges of entering the profession. The group also offers opportunities to build community, develop mentorship connections, and expand your professional network with other clinicians at similar stages of their careers.

Participants will also gain access to tools and resources that can help launch their careers. Resources may include: samples of logs for tracking contact hours and documenting supervision in pre-license process, information for proper completion of licensing application, understanding 1099 vs. W2 employment opportunities, navigating contracts and expectations of work sites, information on ethical considerations and best practices as a helping professional, etc.  The group tends to flow organically based on the needs and experiences of those who participate at each meeting.

Starting your career in mental health can feel like stepping into the unknown. You don’t have to navigate those first steps alone.
